U14 Gaelic teams make encouraging start to the season

Our Lady’s & St. Patrick’s College, Knock 1-2  Victoria College Belfast 3-4

The U14 girls travelled to Our Lady’s and St. Patrick’s College, Knock for their opening fixture of 2015. The Malone Road girls had the better of the opening period. Perpetual movement kept OLSPK on the back-foot. Darcey Smyth of St. Brigid’s and County Antrim proved to be an inspirational captain, leading by example in the middle of the park. When it came time to shoot, the VCB players made more than they missed. Cate Blayney of Bredagh was in sparkling form at the point of the spear, clipping a couple of especially tidy points. Alice Kennedy and Kirsten Matthews also got in on the act. Before the break Cate Blayney finished a terrific necklace of passes to push VCB into a commanding lead.

Keeva McAllister and Bredagh’s Rachael McCormack were immense in defence, winning the aerial battles and frustrating the marauding Gilnahirk forwards. Hannah Sproule proved to be outstanding again in the centre half-back position, allowing nothing to get past her. Her fantastic kicking ability meant that her clearances often by-passed midfield and went straight to the receptive half-forwards.

Harriet Bedi played the second half in goal and her excellent stops kept VCB ahead throughout. In the end the VCB girls were deserving winners.

Ulster School's U14 Camogie Championship 2015

The U14 squad played their championship matches at Ballyholland GAC without their star player, Cate Blayney of Bredagh. This proved to be decisive as we were not able to effectively turn possession into scores on the board. We saw some outstanding midfield work from Sarah Hand, Darcey Smyth and Harriet Bedi. Rachael McCormack, Keeva McAllister and Hannah Sproule proved to be the bedrock of our defence
