VCB 2X1 Hockey Team progress in the McDowell Cup

VCB progress to Quarter-Finals

The 2X1A team won their 3rd round game against Ballyclare secondary on Thursday 15 December 2-1 in extra time. The have already beaten Methody in strokes in the first round and beat Larne grammar securely 3-0 in the second round. The VCB girls started the third round game with attacking play and this continued throughout the game with fast pace and quick passing. Harriet Bedi, Rebecca Bunn and Sarah Hanley passed the ball effectively to win several penalty corners, but the team were unable to convert. Ballyclare in the first half broke through the VCB defence with excellent play from their CF and scored. In the last ten minutes VCB were awarded a penalty stroke after strong attacking play by Ara McCarten and Sarah Webb. Phone Hagan bravely stepped up to take the penalty and convincingly hit the back board. The game went to extra time with the silver goal rule, VCB took advantage and Cate Blayney who was perfectly positioned scored the winning goal. 

Both Senior squad teams are now progressing to the quarter final stages of competitions, the 1stX1 to the Senior Shield competition and 2X1 to the Mc Dowell Cup. Ironically both teams have drawn Lurgan College for these quarter final matches and will be played in January.
