Readathon week starting 27-31st January
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Year 8 and 9 pupils will be participating in a sponsored Readathon during the week beginning 27th January – 31st January. Pupils will be reading for pleasure in lessons, doing some fun reading based activities and will have the opportunity to complete their Accelerated Reader quizzes on books they have read. Ms Farrelly, our school librarian, has organised visits from local authors.
Reading for pleasure is fundamental in enhancing literacy skills, even if dyslexia is a factor. Pupils should be aiming for 30 minutes every day as part of their normal routine. Reading is essential to every subject and students who have a higher-than-average reading age will thrive academically. Reading is great for reducing stress and after exam week it will allow pupils to focus on the stories and characters in their novels.
During the Readathon week, it would be great for pupils to have your support at home. Please encourage them to bring a book to school every day or to borrow a book from our school library in advance.
We will be supporting a local charity, Book Trust NI, as part of Readathon week. This charity ensures that everyone has access to books in their home and is inspired to engage with the world of reading for pleasure to improve their life chances. A small £2 voluntary donation can be made on the Parent Pay app or cash donations via the school office if preferred during the Readathon week.
Look out for photographs and updates on our social media pages. We hope Readathon will be a great success and pupils will enjoy doing something different.
Best Regards
