Victoria College Belfast – Regional Champions (IET) FIRST LEGO League

A group of Year 9 pupils from Victoria College demonstrated their science and technology skills when they participated in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional tournament on Tuesday 2 December at W5 in Belfast.

FLL is a global science and technology competition for teams of students aged 9 to 16. It aims to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for future careers. Competing against 16 other schools from all over Northern Ireland, the Victoria College team worked together to complete a Project on Learning to Learn while simultaneously planning, programming  and testing an autonomous robot to solve several missions.

The girls were judged on the design and programming of their LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot and how they used it to solve a set of problems and tasks. Their research and presentation skills were also tested and they were evaluated on how well they co-operated with each other and their competitors.

The girls were absolutely thrilled to be declared Champion of Champions, all the more so because they were the only school present on the day who had not previously competed in FLL.  First to compete in the robotic challenge, they completed the round faultlessly, maintained the top score for remainder of the day and were presented with the trophy for that part of the competition. The team also impressed the judges when they presented their innovative solution to a learning issue.

The girls will now go on to represent Northern Ireland in the UK and Ireland final tournament on 1st  February at Loughborough University.
