Rooicats visit Victoria College

On 3rd October 2016 Victoria College welcomed the Rooicats Netball Team from the Sports Academy George, South Africa.

The Academy is a Christian charity which uses sport as a tool to select, discipline and raise up a new generation of Christian leaders in the underprivileged communities of George, South Africa.

The charity works with talented footballers and netball players from secondary schools in the townships of George.

Twelve netball players and four coaches attended assembly at Victoria. Miss Du Toit welcomed them in her native language of Afrikaans. The girls sang and danced for our pupils and then spent the morning chatting over morning coffee and exploring the school.

After break they travelled to Queen's PE centre for a round robin netball tournament with the Victoria and Rathmore Grammar School senior teams. All the girls thoroughly enjoyed the fast and skilful games. Our South African visitors proved too talented and notched up another victory. (They have won all their tour matches so far.)

We were delighted that Ulster Rugby's South African player Wiehahn Herbst came along to offer the girls support. The teams chatted to him and had their photographs taken.

At the end of the matches the Rooicats' coach asked if the girls would pray with them and some of their team came back to school and joined our S.U. for the afternoon.

All the players enjoyed the camaraderie back at school after a delicious lunch. It was such a pleasure to see how much the travelling team was enjoying Northern Ireland and how much the tour meant to them.

We hope the girls will come again to visit us in the future.
